According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 11, 2025, a Public Affairs Analyst, Dickson Iroegbu, has criticised the process that led to the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Iroegbu said the appointment process was already faulty and could affect public trust in the electoral body.
He expressed disappointment that the procedure followed in selecting Amupitan lacked transparency.
According to him, the new INEC Chairman has not acknowledged that there were issues with the process that brought him into office.

Iroegbu compared the current situation to that of the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who openly admitted that the election that brought him to power in 2007 was flawed and later initiated reforms to correct the system.
He said that kind of honesty and commitment is what Nigeria needs now.
He noted that the National Council of State approved the nomination of Professor Amupitan from the North-Central region.
However, he questioned the composition of the Council during the meeting, asking how many former Heads of State were present to make such a major decision.
“For me the process that brought this man as new INEC chairman was flawed because at the Council of State meeting, how many Heads of State were there?
So it is the umpire appointed by his boss, and I don’t expect any miracle from Amupitan, but I hope he proves us wrong because INEC is such a place that no matter how impeccable you are and you get in there, you get smeared and you lose the sense of pride and self-preservation,” he stated.
