The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticized Nigeria’s security agencies and mainstream media, accusing them of systemic hypocrisy and ethnic profiling, following the recent arrest of a woman allegedly impersonating a Nigerian soldier in Katsina State.
In a press statement released on Monday by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group condemned what it described as a “shameless double standard” in the treatment of security-related incidents across the country.
According to IPOB, the woman, who was reportedly dressed in full military uniform and found in possession of loaded magazines, was apprehended in a region plagued by violent extremism. The group questioned why such an incident has not led to widespread condemnation of the military as an institution, the same way IPOB is often collectively blamed for crimes across the southeast.

“For years, the Nigerian authorities have cultivated a dangerous and fraudulent habit: ascribing every conceivable crime—whether real, exaggerated, or fabricated—to IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN),” the statement read.
The group alleged that while actual terrorists in the North are often treated with leniency or rewarded through so-called amnesty programs, peaceful pro-Biafra agitators are labeled as criminals and subjected to arrests and prolonged detentions without trial.
“While Fulani herdsmen lay waste to farming communities with AK-47s, the state looks away—and then has the gall to howl ‘ESN!’ the moment the victims organize to defend themselves,” IPOB stated.
The pro-Biafra group argued that the arrest in Katsina is further evidence of what it describes as an “institutionalized ethnic prejudice” embedded within Nigeria’s security architecture. IPOB maintains that the selective outrage and inconsistent media narratives reflect an orchestrated campaign to malign the group and suppress the Igbo struggle for self-determination.
“If a woman caught in military uniform cannot be used to tarnish the entire Nigerian Army, then one criminal in civilian clothing cannot justify labeling IPOB a terrorist organization,” the statement added.
IPOB called for an immediate end to what it described as the “reckless and malicious criminalization” of its members and reiterated its position that the group is a peaceful movement seeking internationally recognized rights.
“The world is watching. Justice may be delayed, but truth cannot be permanently buried beneath the debris of state propaganda,” the group concluded.
