Insecurity: Police ban sales, use of fireworks in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has banned the sale and use of fireworks in the state during the Yuletide period amid growing insecurity concerns in the country.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, said the move aligns with ongoing security assessments and national considerations, adding that the enforcement is necessary for the festive season.

Lawal, who spoke during his weekly lecture and address to officers and men of the command, stated that fireworks can cause unnecessary panic and may be exploited by criminals to mask their activities.

While expressing concern over the rise in false alarms and staged kidnapping incidents aimed at extorting money, the police boss stressed that such acts undermine genuine security efforts and warned that the command will decisively clamp down on those involved.

He also ordered intensive and aggressive patrols, intelligence-led raids of identified black spots, and the deployment of covert operatives to enhance intelligence gathering and early threat detection.

Lawal assured residents and travellers of their safety throughout the season, describing security as a collective responsibility, and advised motorists and road users to exercise restraint and remain vigilant.
