I Went to a Bank to Look for a Job, but the CEO Said, ‘You Want to Work in a Bank? You, That Has No Balance?’ — Sammy Cole

Nigerian comedian Sammy Cole has shared how he transformed personal challenges into a source of humour and inspiration, using comedy as a tool to empower himself and others living with physical disabilities.

Speaking on Rubbin’ Minds, a Channels Television programme aired on Sunday, October 12, 2025, Cole reflected on his journey, his creative process, and how he overcame discrimination to become one of Nigeria’s rising comedy voices.

The show host began by discussing the term “disability,” to which Cole replied, “Who is being disabled, right? That’s the term, yes. Instead of using the word disability, the more correct term to use is physically challenged.”

When asked when he discovered humour as a means to cope with his condition, Cole explained, “Actually, depending on my life experience, like people just make jokes of me unnecessarily. So I use that as humour around it. So I actually create some comedy out of it. And there are some times that I will actually just sit my parent at home, make them laugh. And actually, one person, one of my friends advised me to go into it. So that is my first experience in that competition. And immediately they saw me, they were so surprised that, ah, you came for this audition. I said, yes, let me just give it a try.”

Describing how he creates his material, Cole said his jokes are drawn entirely from real life. “I can just think of a joke, although all the jokes that I used to write is based on life experience. Everything is based on life experience. No fiction. No fiction. I know there are some comedians that they do, they just form jokes on fiction. They will just go on stage, then everybody will laugh at me. Everybody will laugh. That is it.”

He revealed that he often performs at free shows to showcase his talent and inspire others. “There are some times that I want to attend free shows, so just to bring myself out to the world, to see that there’s nothing wrong with me, that it just don’t judge me by my appearance. You get that kind of stuff.”

Recalling a painful but defining encounter early in his life, Cole said, “Like, actually, there was a day where there was some scenario that happened in the beginning of my experience in life. So actually, I went to the bank. I’m a business education graduate. So I went to the bank to secure for a job. True life story, the CEO was like this you want to work in a bank in pidgin he said You wey no balance, how you want make the account balance.”

Asked if he felt hurt by the mockery, Cole responded calmly, “No. No. One thing about me is that in secondary school, I tried to discriminate a lot. So I actually gained from that experience.”
