According to a report by Arise News on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Ene Obi, a Women’s Rights Activist and Development Advocate, has challenged the government’s push to tax commercial sex workers, arguing that if the state seeks to collect revenue from them, it must first guarantee their fundamental rights, social protection, and security.
Speaking on the inherent contradictions of taxing an activity that remains largely criminalized and stigmatized, Obi, a renowned Development Advocate, insisted that taxation must be paired with public service benefits.

“If Sex Workers Are Made To Pay Taxes, They Should Also Have Access To Social Amenities, Benefits, and Protection,” Ene Obi stated, highlighting the principle that civic contribution should be reciprocal.
Ene Obi tied the vulnerability of sex workers directly to the country’s economic crisis and the disproportionate effect of poverty on women.
She underscored the severe risks faced by this group, noting, “They face gender-based violence more.”
Furthermore, she pointed to the root cause of desperation driving many women into the sex work industry, linking it to the nation’s widespread economic hardship.
“Over 100 million Nigerians are living below the poverty line, and the burden of poverty often falls on women,” she lamented.
