The Abia State Government has said that the electric buses it is introducing into its transport system are designed to ensure passenger safety, provide affordable transport fares for citizens, and achieve zero smoke emissions.
The Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, stated this in Umuahia while delivering his address at the Abia–Türkiye Investment Summit and Product Exhibition.
He stressed that the introduction of AI-driven traffic lights and the construction of modern bus terminals in Umuahia are aimed at restoring order in the state’s towns and delivering more efficient services to residents.
Ukaegbu said the state has taken delivery of 20 electric buses and is expecting an additional 20 within a few days, with the bus terminals already in place.
He further noted that the ministry would prioritise expanding access for persons with disabilities, as some of the electric buses were specifically designed for their convenience.
He added that bus terminals across the state would be equipped with integrated ticketing systems, retail outlets and upgraded security networks to ensure the convenience and safety of passengers.
