Chelsea endured their first Champions League setback of the season, falling 3-1 to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Despite flashes of promise, the London side were undone by costly defensive errors and inefficiency in the final third.
The game got off to a disastrous start for Enzo Maresca’s men when Trevoh Chalobah mistakenly scored an own goal in the 20th minute. Six minutes later, Moisés Caicedo’s rash foul handed Bayern a penalty, which Harry Kane converted with ease.
The Blues responded swiftly through Cole Palmer, who latched onto Malo Gusto’s pass and slotted a composed finish in the 29th minute to reduce the deficit.
Chelsea grew into the game after the break but squandered several good chances, with Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández both missing opportunities, while the full-backs failed to deliver telling crosses.
Bayern punished their wastefulness in the 63rd minute, when another mistake at the back allowed Kane to score his second of the night and restore the two-goal cushion.
Palmer later had a goal chalked off for offside, while substitutions, including Alejandro Garnacho and Estevão, added energy without bringing results.
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer stood firm as Bayern saw out the contest, leaving Chelsea frustrated that their downfall stemmed more from their own mistakes than from Bayern’s brilliance.
