During a recent interview on Channels Television on Monday, June 8, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo made a series of allegations directed at former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, claiming that there were instances of financial exploitation involving political aspirants in the South East region.

Okonkwo, while speaking on the programme, suggested that contrary to public perception, some politicians who publicly distance themselves from monetary dealings are allegedly involved in demanding funds behind the scenes.

He specifically referenced what he described as contributions or payments expected from aspirants associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South East, framing it as an example of political double standards and hypocrisy.

According to him, there is a contradiction between public statements and private political conduct. He argued that while some leaders project an image of rejecting financial inducements, they are allegedly still engaged in receiving money from political hopefuls. His comments were presented as part of a broader criticism of political accountability and transparency within opposition circles.

In his words, Okonkwo stated: “You will go to diaspora and say I don’t give shi shi but you collect shi shi, I don’t know, my people are suffering.”
