According to a report by the Punch on Monday, September 22, 2025, Nigerian security forces have maintained their operational presence despite a significant terrorist assault on the 152 Task Force Battalion in Banki, a border community in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State. Defence Headquarters spokesperson Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye confirmed that while the troops suffered a loss, they successfully held their ground against the attackers. Kangye emphasized the military’s resilience, stating, “The troops are still at their base, although we lost a soldier during the encounter,” underscoring both the human cost and operational determination following Thursday night’s attack.
The assault represents the latest in a series of deadly incidents plaguing the region, coming shortly after the Darajamal attack that claimed 63 lives. According to local officials, the recent violence resulted in five civilian fatalities and six injuries, with wounded survivors being evacuated across the border to Mora, Cameroon for medical treatment. Many residents have fled the area seeking safety, while those remaining face ongoing security concerns in the conflict-affected border community.

Military authorities have sought to reassure the public about the security situation, with the Acting GOC of the 7 Division conducting an on-the-spot assessment following the engagement. Despite reports of multiple military vehicles being set ablaze during the attack, officials maintain that troop morale remains high and the situation is under control. The military’s response highlights both the persistent challenges faced by security forces and their commitment to maintaining positions in vulnerable border areas.
Local government officials have responded to the crisis, with Bama LGA Chairman Modu Ali Gujja visiting affected communities and military authorities. Governor Zulum has promised financial support of N500,000 to each family that lost loved ones in the attack. These measures aim to address immediate humanitarian needs while reinforcing government support for both security forces and civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
