BREAKING: Tinubu Commissions Renovated National Arts Theatre, Now Named After Wole Soyinka

President Bola Tinubu has reopened the renovated Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, formerly known as the National Arts Theatre in Lagos, officially marking the return of the iconic cultural landmark.

Tinubu arrived at the venue at around 6:24 p.m. on Wednesday to lead the reopening ceremony of the centre, which now bears the name of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee, funded and supervised the renovation, while the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy provided policy guidance and oversight. Their combined efforts transformed the facility into a national asset and a launchpad for Nigeria’s creative industries.

Tinubu had renamed the building in July 2024 to honour Soyinka’s outstanding contributions to literature and culture.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts would not only promote art, tourism, and culture but also host international conferences and world-class performances.

“This facility will serve as a premier destination, comparable to any world-class conference centre, with a unique blend of arts and culture,” Sanwo-Olu said during an inspection of the venue in August 2024.
