According to a report by London Evening Standard on Wednesday June 10, 2026, Julian Alvarez has reportedly decided against a move to Arsenal, dealing a significant setback to the Premier League champions in their pursuit of a new attacking star.
The Atletico Madrid forward has been a long-term target for Mikel Arteta, but recent reports suggest the Argentine has no interest in joining the Gunners and would instead prefer a transfer to Barcelona if he leaves his current club.
For more than a year, Alvarez has been regarded as one of Arsenal’s most desirable transfer targets. Arteta has admired the striker since their time together at Manchester City. The Arsenal manager is believed to have followed the player’s progress closely while searching for elite attacking reinforcements.
According to recent reports, Alvarez has now made his position clear regarding his future. Despite Arsenal’s strong interest, the World Cup winner is said to favour Barcelona over a move to north London. This development represents a major obstacle for Arsenal, who view him as a player capable of strengthening an already successful squad.
Interest in Alvarez is not a recent development. Arteta reportedly considered a move for the forward before choosing to sign Viktor Gyokeres last summer. Although Gyokeres contributed significantly to Arsenal’s Premier League title success, speculation linking Alvarez with the club has continued.
Reports from Spain indicate that Alvarez remains happy at Atletico Madrid and has no intention of forcing an exit. Any potential transfer therefore appears unlikely unless Barcelona can negotiate an agreement with Atletico.
That scenario may be difficult to achieve. Atletico Madrid are reportedly determined to keep Alvarez and have shown little willingness to discuss a sale. Club officials are said to consider him a vital figure in their long-term plans.
Arsenal therefore face challenges on multiple fronts. Atletico are reluctant to sell, while Alvarez does not currently see the Emirates as his preferred destination. The Gunners are still expected to strengthen their attack this summer, but Alvarez now appears increasingly unlikely to be part of those plans.
