Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Kogi and Kwara States, describing the situation as a “national emergency” that requires urgent and decisive action from the government.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Sunday, Obi said he was “deeply disturbed” by the killing of over 27 people in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State following a violent attack by armed bandits.
“The images are heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire people of Kogi State,” Obi said.
He also cited reports from neighbouring Kwara State, where nine out of the 16 local government areas — Baruten, Edu, Ekiti, Ifelodun, Isin, Kaiama, Oke-Ero, Patigi, and Irepodun — are reportedly under siege by bandits who now demand food and drinks as ransom.

Obi described the growing wave of insecurity across Nigeria as “deeply troubling,” lamenting that violent attacks and mass killings have become a recurring tragedy.
“The security situation is now a national emergency. It is deeply troubling that insecurity has become a normal occurrence in our nation, where our citizens die daily more than in countries at war. This is not normal,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor said the inability of citizens to live and sleep in peace highlights a failure of leadership in protecting lives and property — the most fundamental responsibility of government.
“Our citizens cannot sleep in their own homes in peace; our farmers are being driven away from their lands by bandits; our children are living in fear of being attacked, and our nation continues to bleed,” he said.
Obi extended condolences to the victims’ familie
s and urged leaders at all levels to take urgent steps to safeguard lives and restore peace across the country.
“May God grant eternal rest to the victims, comfort to their grieving families, and give wisdom and courage to our leaders to protect every Nigerian life,” he added.
The recent surge in attacks in Kogi and Kwara has intensified public anxiety over the security situation in Nigeria, with calls mounting for stronger measures to curb the activities of bandits and armed groups.
