BREAKING: Ogun Launches First-Ever Commercial Flight

History was made in Ogun State on Tuesday as the first commercial flight took off at the newly constructed Gateway International Airport, located along Iperu–Ilishan road, in Ikenne.

This milestone achievement mark the beginning of new things in the state with the commencement of flight operations at the state-of-the-art facility.

Our correspondent reports that the ceremony attracted top government officials, aviation stakeholders, and residents who described the event as a dream fulfilled.

The Gateway International Airport came alive with excitement as dignitaries from all walks of life gathered to witness the first-ever commercial flight taking off on Ogun soil.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, in his address, described the event as a landmark achievement in his administration’s commitment to repositioning Ogun State as Nigeria’s investment and industrial hub.

He explained that the state’s development plan — crafted in collaboration with Olabisi Onabanjo University and the United Kingdom Foreign Development Office — emphasizes focused and qualitative governance, with strong public-private partnerships to drive sustainable economic growth.

The governor noted that the airport is part of a multi-modal transport network designed to connect road, rail, air, and water systems, thereby improving trade and mobility across the state.

Governor Abiodun commended the Minister of Aviation, Mr Festus Keyamo, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for their diligence and professionalism in ensuring the facility met international standards.

In separate interviews, Speaker Oludaisi Elemide expressed delight that Ogun State has joined the league of states with a functional international airports.

Also speaking, the former Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madehin, said she felt fulfilled witnessing such remarkable development in her lifetime.

On his part, the Pastor of Victory Life Bible Church, Apostle Lawrence Achudume, commended the initiative, saying it would spur economic and social growth across Iperu, Ogun State, and the nation at large
