A petition against an upcoming art exhibition invoked the name of Riliwanu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos. When FIJ called the king for clarification on Tuesday, he gave a confused response and did not seem to know about the details in the document.
Since Uzo Njoku, a painter and pattern maker, announced her upcoming art exhibition event, tagged ‘An Owambe Exhibition’, some social media entities have been lashing out and demanding the cancellation of the event.
Lagospidia, an account which has become popular for spreading anti-Igbo narratives on X, is one of those fronting the efforts to cancel Njoku’s upcoming art exhibition.

By Unlimiting Power of God, Every Dream materialized.
During the August 1–10
#EndBadGovernance protests in 2024, Lagospedia, the account that became Lagospidia, claimed that the demonstration was a coordinated Igbo-led attack on Lagos. There was no proof of this claim. Yet, it urged Yorubas in the southwest to protest against Igbos in the region.
After an FIJ report, and after Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Governor, distanced himself from the account, it was deactivated and then resurfaced as
Lagospidia.
On Tuesday, the Lagospidia account shared a petition with the letterhead of Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, addressed to Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the Special Assistant to Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture.
“Furthermore, Alaiyeluwa respectfully requests that your ministry review existing policies, rules, and regulations governing public exhibitions and cultural showcases. That will help ensure that this event, as well as future events of this nature, are subject to proper approval and oversight by your ministry before they are allowed to take place,” the letter further read.
FIJ phoned Oba Akiolu on Tuesday to know if the letter originated from him or if he was aware of it.
“Everything that has to do with tradition or indigenous Lagos, they have to obtain clearance from me before using my name,” was his response.
“That’s why I wrote that letter. Two, the man parading himself as Oloja, is it not that one?
“There is somebody parading himself as Abiola Oloja, is it not that one or is it the one they want to stage at somewhere?”
When FIJ told Akiolu that a copy of the letter was obtained on X, he said he did not know anything about it.
“Very soon, The Guardian has written that they want to come and interview me. When I’m ready, I’m going to come with the other newspapers and listen to all of them to answer questions,” the king told FIJ.
FIJ sent a copy of the letter to Akiolu on WhatsApp, but there has been no further response.
