Accusations involving the former Mele Kyari sparked a heated confrontation at a Senate committee meeting.
The committee was informed by Senator Tony Nwoye, in a video that was posted by AIT News, that he had met with Kyari personally around one week prior and had obtained promises that Kyari would appear before the committee. Nwoye, on the other hand, claimed to have found out later that Kyari was in a German hospital.
Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi tried to raise a point of order, interrupting Nwoye while she was providing the facts. Tensions rose during the committee meeting as a result of the interruption; Nwoye became visibly agitated and demanded that he be given the opportunity to finish his presentation.
Nwoye insisted he wasn’t defending Kyari or even serving as his lawyer. By submitting what he thought was pertinent material to the committee’s work, he was merely fulfilling his duty, he insisted.
The senator said that the decision to issue an arrest warrant for Kyari and other such measures should have been left to the committee. He felt his only responsibility was to share the news he had learned concerning Kyari’s condition and whereabouts.
In his remarks, Nwoye asked, “Onyekachi Nwebonyi, what do you mean by that?” Is it possible for you to now override my decision? Even though I am not his lawyer, he has no power to silence me. You can’t treat me that way, Onyekachi Nwebonyi. Give me a moment to wrap up my presentation. Can you explain what you mean? I don’t see how you can refuse to follow my orders. I am obligated.
While discussing why Kyari hadn’t shown up for their meeting, the committee members engaged in the exchange.
