BREAKING: Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule Calls on National Assembly to Set Up Special Courts for Expedited Corruption Trials

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has renewed his call to the National Assembly to establish special courts dedicated to handling corruption cases, aiming to fast-track justice and bolster Nigeria’s anti-graft efforts. Making the plea during the passing-out parade of new Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detective cadets in Akwanga on September 26, 2025, Governor Sule emphasized the urgent need to address the lengthy delays currently plaguing corruption trials.

Governor Sule highlighted that cases involving economic and financial crimes in Nigeria often drag on for years, undermining the fight against corruption and allowing many accused individuals to evade timely justice. “The lengthy periods it takes to prosecute corruption cases risk the chance that those charged might escape justice,” he said, stressing that such delays also risk diminishing the EFCC’s enthusiasm in pursuing older cases.

Speaking at the Nigeria Police Mobile Force Training College in Nasarawa, Sule commended the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, for his unwavering commitment to stamping out corruption, noting the commission’s significant achievements including over 4,000 convictions last year alone. Yet, he voiced concern that the impact of these successes is often blunted by the slow pace of the judiciary.

He urged lawmakers to seize the current constitutional review process as an opportunity to enact reforms that would lead to the establishment of special courts specifically designed to handle corruption cases. “Once we do that, then we can have a country that people can be proud of,” Sule remarked. He added that efficient prosecution of corruption cases would improve Nigeria’s global image, which is currently tainted by perceptions of endemic graft and weak judicial enforcement.

Experts such as Debo Adeniran, Executive Director of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, have supported the call, stressing that special courts could greatly enhance the speed and efficiency of corruption prosecutions if implemented alongside broader judicial reforms.

Governor Sule’s appeal addresses a critical bottleneck in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive, where judicial delays have long frustrated government efforts and invited public skepticism. The EFCC currently manages about 18,000 corruption cases, with thousands more investigations and petitions pending, highlighting the volume of work that demands a more specialized and expedited judicial approach.

Nasarawa communities, like many across Nigeria, bear the socio-economic brunt of corruption, with resources often diverted away from essential public services due to graft. By calling for special courts, Governor Sule aims to strengthen institutional responses that can deter corruption and deliver justice swiftly.

In conclusion, the establishment of dedicated corruption courts as advocated by Governor Abdullahi Sule represents a strategic step towards a more credible and effective justice system in Nigeria. As the National Assembly continues the constitutional review process, the potential creation of such courts could mark a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing battle against corruption, improving public trust and reinforcing governance.
