According to report by The Nation on Monday, June 8, 2026, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has refuted claims suggesting that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over alleged replacement of candidates.

In a statement on Monday, the group’s spokesman, Habibu Sale Mohammed, told The Nation that the reports were completely unfounded and should be disregarded as mere rumours.

Some media platforms had earlier reported that the Kwankwasiyya bloc was considering exiting the NDC if its loyalists, previously nominated under an internal arrangement, were removed from the party’s candidate list.

The reports also claimed the issue stemmed from alleged violations of an earlier power-sharing agreement within the party.

However, Mohammed dismissed such assertions, insisting that the movement had not raised any objection to the party’s decisions.

He stressed that neither Kwankwaso nor the Kwankwasiyya structure had issued any complaint regarding candidate substitutions.

He further explained that the party primaries were conducted on May 29 in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, winners from the primaries were confirmed on the same day, indicating that the process followed due procedure.

Mohammed added that stakeholders within the NDC had previously agreed on a consensus-based approach where necessary, which guided the selection and submission of candidates without internal disputes or breakdown of order.

He also noted that Kwankwaso had not communicated any grievance to the movement regarding the situation and suggested that the party leadership was better positioned to address any concerns related to candidate adjustments or internal arrangements.

The Kwankwasiyya spokesman maintained that the reports of tension or planned defection were fabricated, reaffirming the group’s commitment to the NDC’s processes and internal harmony.

The movement described the alleged crisis as media speculation, insisting that the party remains stable and united despite the circulating claims.
