According to a report by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Vice President JD Vance has reiterated that the United States will continue to define and pursue its own strategic interests regarding Iran, even when those priorities do not fully align with the position of Israel.
In remarks attributed to him during recent media engagements, Vance emphasized that Washington’s approach to Iran; particularly on issues related to regional stability and nuclear negotiations, will be guided primarily by what U.S. officials assess to be the long-term national interest of the United States. He indicated that while Israel remains a key partner and close ally, its preferences will not be the deciding factor in American policy decisions concerning Tehran.
According to the Vice President, the United States continues to view diplomacy as a central tool in addressing tensions with Iran, especially regarding its nuclear program. He argued that maintaining open channels for negotiation and pursuing a structured agreement remain more beneficial to U.S. security objectives than escalation or prolonged military confrontation. At the same time, he underscored that any potential agreement would require strict verification mechanisms to ensure compliance by Iran.
Vance’s position reflects a broader argument within parts of the U.S. administration that foreign policy decisions should not be externally dictated, even by close allies. He stated that differences of opinion between Washington and Jerusalem are not unusual and should be expected in complex geopolitical environments, particularly in the Middle East, where overlapping but not identical interests often shape policy outcomes.
The remarks come amid ongoing regional tensions involving Israel and Iran, as well as continued debate in Washington over the future of sanctions, nuclear diplomacy, and military posture in the Middle East. U.S. officials have in recent months signaled both support for Israel’s security concerns and a parallel effort to prevent further escalation that could draw the United States into a wider conflict.
