According to a report from The Times of Israel dated June 8, 2026, President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon made a rare public request to the Israeli government and its citizens during a CNN interview, claiming that military actions do not provide sustainable safety for communities in northern Israel. He emphasized that the only realistic approach to achieving stability is through political solutions, calling for both parties to have direct talks.
Aoun mentioned that Lebanon is willing to enter discussions to resolve the conflict and foster better ties. Speaking directly to Israel, he remarked, “We are prepared, we are eager, we are dedicated. Are you? If so, let’s come together and converse.”
The Lebanese leader also addressed the impact that ongoing conflicts have inflicted on Lebanon and its population. Highlighting the need for normalcy and tranquility, he stated, “We have had enough and we want to coexist in peace.” He pointed out that the people of Lebanon “deserve to live peacefully and with dignity, and they should not have to witness the destruction of their homes every five to ten years.”
In discussing Israel’s continual military actions, Aoun contended that using force alone will not fulfill its aims. He stated, “They can take over the entire country, they can obliterate the whole area, but they will never achieve their goal.” This statement highlighted his conviction that military operations cannot address the fundamental problems driving the conflict.
Aoun also considered the possibility of direct discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He declared that he would not meet with Netanyahu until a resolution has been established to stop the war. Aoun suggested that any future agreement would be in the form of a non-aggression treaty instead of a complete peace agreement, showing a priority on halting conflicts and averting future confrontations rather than achieving full diplomatic relations.
