Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has recalled how the National Assembly exercised oversight over government spending, citing a controversial military procurement during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari as an example of lawmakers’ efforts to ensure accountability.

Saraki made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, Friday, 11 June, 2026, while discussing the role of the legislature in scrutinizing executive actions and public expenditure. According to him, lawmakers were not reluctant to challenge the executive when questions arose regarding compliance with constitutional and financial procedures.

Reflecting on a major defence acquisition undertaken by the Buhari administration, Saraki pointed to the purchase of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from the United States government, which were acquired as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and other security threats.

“I remember in 2018 when the Buhari government was buying Tucanos from the US government to fight insecurity. But money has been spent before approval,” Saraki said.

The former Senate President explained that the issue became a matter of concern because funds had reportedly been disbursed before obtaining the necessary legislative authorization. He noted that the National Assembly raised questions over the process, emphasizing the need for government agencies and the executive arm to adhere strictly to constitutional provisions governing public expenditure.

Saraki said legislative oversight is essential to preserving transparency and accountability in governance, regardless of which political party controls the executive branch. He maintained that lawmakers have a responsibility to ensure that public funds are spent in accordance with the law and approved budgetary frameworks.
