BREAKING: I’ll Prioritize and Protect Yoruba Interests if Elected President – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged that if elected president in 2027, the interests of the Yoruba people will be a top priority in his administration.

In a statement released on Thursday by his media consultant, Kola Johnson, Atiku dismissed fears that his presidency could result in Hausa/Fulani domination over Yoruba or other ethnic groups, describing such concerns as baseless.

“The entire Yoruba stock is my larger extended family and in-laws,” Atiku said.

He pointed to his long-standing personal and marital ties with the Yoruba as proof of his deep connection to the South-West.

“I count myself extremely lucky to have a wife from among this noble people, which means the bond uniting me with the Yoruba is like the bond of family. This is why the Yoruba, whether individually or collectively, have always occupied a special place in my heart,” he said.

Atiku highlighted his first marriage to Titi Abubakar, an Ijesha-born Yoruba woman whom he married in the 1970s, as evidence of that bond.

“We have four Yoruba children together. She is now over 75 years old, and we are still together. My children with Titi sometimes call me Baba Rere (good father). She has been my Jewel of Inestimable Value, and Yorubas have always been among my closest friends and allies,” Atiku added.

The former vice president insisted he has always been detribalised, maintaining close relationships across Nigeria’s ethnic and religious divides even before venturing into politics.

Atiku, who was runner-up in the 2023 election won by President Bola Tinubu, is preparing to challenge him again in the 2027 presidential race.
