According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the Palestinian movement Hamas has announced that “acceptable approaches” have been reached on key contentious issues surrounding a possible Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel, following high-level discussions held in Cairo, Egypt.
In a statement conveyed on Tuesday, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the talks had made notable progress, with mediators helping bridge gaps between the parties involved in the negotiations. According to him, the discussions produced “acceptable approaches from the parties participating in the talks regarding the contentious issues of the ceasefire agreement,” suggesting that some of the major sticking points may be moving closer to resolution.
Qassem explained that Hamas, alongside other Palestinian factions, engaged in the negotiations with what he described as “flexibility and positivity.” He said this approach was taken in response to proposals presented by mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye, whom he credited for their role in facilitating dialogue between the conflicting sides.
He added that the Palestinian groups acted out of what he called “national responsibility” aimed at halting the ongoing destruction and loss of life in Gaza. The remarks indicate continued efforts by Hamas and allied factions to secure a broader ceasefire arrangement amid sustained international diplomatic pressure.
According to Qassem, responsibility for the next phase now rests with Israel and the international oversight mechanism referred to as the “Board of Peace,” which he said is represented by its executive director Nickolay Mladenov. He stated that progress toward implementation would depend on whether the remaining steps of what he described as a broader peace vision for Gaza are fully carried out.
He urged all parties to move toward what he called “real and full implementation” of the proposed framework, signalling cautious optimism while still placing emphasis on unresolved political and security issues.
The latest development comes against the backdrop of the prolonged war in Gaza, which has caused widespread devastation since its escalation in October 2023. Palestinian authorities have reported tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, with a significant proportion of casualties said to be women and children.
Even after a ceasefire reportedly took effect on October 10, 2025, hostilities have not fully ceased. According to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry, continued military actions have resulted in hundreds of additional deaths and thousands of injuries, highlighting the fragility of any existing truce arrangements.
