Baaki, who hails from Benue State, indicated that on June 24, 2026, she traveled from Abuja to Ebonyi State with Habila and other personnel from the Federal Ministry of Works for an official duty supervised by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
She noted that they were accommodated in separate yet adjoining rooms at a staff chalet situated at the minister’s rural residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Baaki clarified that the chalet functioned as lodging for ministry personnel and guests and was not the minister’s private home.
Baaki recalled that the last time she encountered Habila was on the evening of June 26, after Habila returned from getting her hair done. She shared that Habila came to her room to display her updated hairstyle before they had a short conversation.
“Habila mentioned she felt weary and intended to shower before going to bed. That was the final moment I saw her alive,” Baaki recounted in the affidavit.
She also mentioned that she grew concerned the next morning when Habila did not exit her room as anticipated. After several attempts to reach her by phone with no success, she knocked on the door but heard no reply.
Baaki said she informed a domestic staff member to help look around the area, and when Habila was still unaccounted for, they alerted other staff members. She added that the room, locked from the inside, was ultimately forced open.
According to her, Habila was discovered unconscious on the ground near the entrance of the room and was quickly transported to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed she was deceased upon arrival.
Baaki asserted that she created the affidavit willingly and without any pressure to aid investigators in clarifying the events surrounding Habila’s passing.
Daily Post stated that police inquiries are still in progress, while attorneys for the Minister of Works have sought a detailed forensic autopsy to ascertain the precise cause of death prior to Habila’s body being returned to her family for burial.
