BREAKING: Dangote Refinery Halts Petrol Sales in Naira

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it will stop selling petrol in naira, a move that has unsettled marketers and raised fresh concerns over fuel pricing and foreign exchange pressures.

In a notice emailed to customers at 6:42 pm on Friday, the refinery stated that the suspension would take effect from Sunday, September 28, 2025. The company cited the depletion of its crude-for-naira allocation as the reason for the move.

The email, signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, carried the subject line: “Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales, Effective 28th September 2025.” Customers with ongoing naira-based transactions were instructed to formally request refunds.

The communication read in part:

“Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products beyond our Naira-Crude allocations.

As a result, we cannot continue PMS sales in naira at this time.

This suspension will be effective from Sunday, 28th September 2025. Updates on the resumption of naira transactions will follow. Customers wishing to claim refunds for current naira transactions should formally request processing.”

This announcement comes amid rising tensions at the refinery, which is currently involved in a dispute with labour unions over the alleged dismissal of over 800 Nigerian employees a situation that has provoked public outrage and calls for government intervention.

This is not the refinery’s first temporary halt of local currency sales.

In March 2025, Dangote briefly paused naira-based sales of refined products, citing insufficient allocations under the crude-for-naira programme. At the time, the move fueled concerns about the dollarisation of petrol sales, with prices nearing N1,000 per litre at some stations.

Analysts warn the latest suspension could destabilize the downstream sector, potentially driving petrol prices higher if sales shift mainly to dollars. Jeremiah Olatide, CEO of Petroleumprice.ng, noted that prices could exceed N900 per litre, emphasizing that Dangote Refinery had previously helped stabilize pump prices.

The halt also coincides with heightened labour tensions. On Friday, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria accused the refinery of anti-labour practices following the mass terminations. Union leaders have pledged to resist what they describe as “an unfair and insensitive corporate decision,” warning of nationwide solidarity actions if the dispute is not resolved.
