BREAKING: Calm Outside Netanyahu’s Home in Jerusalem as 65,000 Gather to Witness Hostage Release

Outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Jerusalem, the streets were unusually quiet on Monday morning, a striking contrast to the jubilant scenes unfolding in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, where more than 65,000 people gathered to watch the long-awaited release of Israeli hostages from Gaza.

For nearly two years, the area around Netanyahu’s residence on Azza Street had been the center of weekly protests demanding stronger action to bring the hostages home. But as Israel received seven living captives from Hamas, the tension gave way to calm.

By 8:30 a.m., the normally congested streets near the prime minister’s private home were empty, with traffic flowing freely for the first time in years. “It feels strange,” said one passerby. “It’s too quiet.”

Just a few blocks away, around 200 people gathered outside the official Prime Minister’s Residence on Balfour Street, where a large screen had been set up at the protest tent that had long symbolized the families’ struggle.

“I’m very excited,” said Laurie Tamres Maderer, standing with her husband, an Israeli flag draped over her shoulders.

“I woke up early to be here, to celebrate our hostages coming home and, hopefully, the war ending completely.”

Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, the atmosphere was electric. The vast plaza known as Hostages Square, which has been the emotional heart of the hostage movement since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, overflowed with tens of thousands of people, families, activists, and supporters waving flags and holding photos of their loved ones.

An emcee announced that 65,000 people had filled the square and urged those parked nearby to move their cars to make room for even more expected to arrive “to be together and welcome the hostages who are finally returning home after a two-year struggle.”

Large screens across the square displayed slideshows of the freed hostages, showing footage of them before their abduction.

Hopeful music played between clips, occasionally interrupted by live news broadcasts that drew rounds of applause each time a freed hostage or their relative appeared on-screen.

The crowd erupted in cheers when Einav Zangauker, mother of released hostage Matan Zangauker and a leading activist in the hostage campaign, was heard on Channel 12 telling her son over the phone, “There’s no war, you’re coming home.”

Moments later, spontaneous applause broke out again as the first images of freed hostages, brothers David and Ariel Cunio, and soldier Nimrod Cohen, flashed on the screen.

In one corner of the square, hundreds packed into a prayer tent for morning Sukkot services, waving the four species in a symbolic gesture of thanksgiving.

On the other side, volunteers handed out cookies near the Beit Ariella Library, as reporters jostled to interview emotional family members and supporters.
