Nigeria’s first Olympic torchbearer, Rashidi Oshoba, has revealed that former President once made far-reaching promises to him, including a substantial financial reward, houses across the country, and an official vehicle.
Speaking in an interview with Punch News, Oshoba recounted his experience after being recognized for his contributions to sports and national service. He claimed that the promises were made during Buhari’s administration but were never fulfilled.
According to Oshoba, “He promised to give me N920,000,000, a house in all the states, and an official car.”
The former athlete expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that despite the assurances, he did not receive the benefits that were allegedly promised to him. He said the development had left him feeling neglected despite his achievements and service to the country.
Oshoba’s remarks have since generated discussion about the welfare and recognition of retired sports personalities in Nigeria, with many calling for greater support for athletes who have represented the nation on the global stage.
