According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, September 21, 2025, a notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Ummaru, has issued a stark warning to Nigerian authorities, cautioning that ongoing military operations against armed groups in the North could worsen insecurity across the country.
Ummaru, who has been linked to a network of violent gangs terrorizing communities, claimed that attempts to eliminate bandits through sustained offensives would only trigger retaliation and lead to greater instability. He argued that killing members of his group would not end the menace but rather multiply it.
“Any attempt to kill 10 bandits will result in 20 more rising in retaliation,” Ummaru reportedly said. “And if 30 are killed, the consequences will spread into cities and villages, bringing more unrest.”

The comments reflect the deepening challenge faced by security agencies, who in recent months have intensified air and ground assaults on armed groups operating across forests and border regions in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, and Sokoto States. The government has repeatedly described the bandits as a grave threat to national security, with their activities linked to mass abductions, cattle rustling, extortion, and the displacement of thousands of rural residents.
Security experts, however, have dismissed Ummaru’s remarks as an attempt to instill fear and undermine military efforts. They argue that bandit leaders often issue such statements to discourage offensives and preserve their influence over vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has insisted that it will not relent in its mission to dismantle criminal networks fueling violence in the North. A senior military source told Daily Post that ongoing operations are designed to weaken the capacity of bandits, degrade their hideouts, and restore normalcy to affected areas.
Civil society groups have also called on the government to combine military action with dialogue, economic development, and improved intelligence gathering, stressing that insecurity cannot be solved by force alone.
Ummaru’s warning comes at a time when residents in several northern states continue to live under the shadow of fear, with many communities dependent on local vigilantes and joint security patrols for protection.
As military pressure mounts, observers believe that the government will need a balanced strategy—one that addresses both the immediate threat of armed groups and the long-term drivers of banditry, including poverty, unemployment, and weak governance.Evangelist Obi: Four Vehicles Deployed Across Anambra to Pick Up Mentally Ill Persons
