BREAKING: ASUU to Begin Two-Week Warning Strike Monday, Stirring Concerns Across Tertiary Institutions

Barring any last-minute intervention, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is set to commence a two-week warning strike on Monday following the expiration of its two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government.

The ultimatum, which ended on Sunday night, was issued to pressure the government into addressing the lecturers’ long-standing demands, including improved welfare, full implementation of past agreements, and better funding for public universities.

As of press time, the Federal Government had yet to issue an official response to avert the impending industrial action, heightening fears of another disruption in Nigeria’s academic calendar.

Sources confirmed that ASUU branches across several federal universities, including the University of Jos, Ahmadu Bello University, and the University of Abuja, have already begun mobilising members in anticipation of the strike.

Despite ongoing talks between both parties, the union insists that the government’s promises have not translated into tangible action. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the union would proceed with the warning strike unless “something substantial” emerges from the government in the next 48 hours.
“The ultimatum expires today, and unless the government responds meaningfully, the strike begins. If we get something concrete, we’ll consult our members before deciding the next step,” he said.

On the government’s part, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, last week urged ASUU to exercise patience, noting that the Tinubu administration had made progress in addressing several of the union’s concerns.

Alausa disclosed that the government had released ₦50 billion for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances and earmarked another ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three tranches.
“They deserve better pay, and we’re committed to that. But we can’t provide everything at once. What matters is that we’re sincere in improving their welfare,”

the minister stated. He also said outstanding promotion arrears and other allowances would be cleared by 2026.

In a bid to ensure transparency, Alausa revealed that the Solicitor-General of the Federation and officials from the Ministry of Justice are now directly involved in the negotiations to guarantee the enforceability of any agreements reached.

However, ASUU maintains that government assurances without concrete timelines have repeatedly led to broken promises.

With lectures expected to be suspended nationwide from Monday, students and parents are anxiously watching as the standoff between ASUU and the government enters another critical phase.

Efforts to reach the Ministry of Education’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, for comments were unsuccessful as she declined to respond to inquiries.
