BREAKING: ASUU Challenges FG on ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy, Insists Lecturers Won’t Bow to Pressure

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dismissed the Federal Government’s directive enforcing the “no work, no pay” policy, declaring that the union will not bow to threats or intimidation.

ASUU President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, made this known on Monday during an interview on Politics Today on Arise TV, insisting that the union remains firm in its ongoing strike despite what he described as the government’s attempts to divide lecturers through selective payment and intimidation.

“We don’t respond to threats, and nobody can threaten us,” Piwuna said, adding that the government’s engagement with other academic unions such as the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) was a deliberate move to weaken ASUU’s unity.

“He is threatening us, writing to NAMDA and CONUA, telling them they can get their salaries. He wants to divide us, but we are united in this matter,” he stated.

Piwuna described the approach as “anti-labour” and counterproductive, warning that such tactics would only deepen instability within the education sector. He also emphasized that ASUU continues to receive support from other unions including SSANU, NASU, and counterparts in polytechnics and colleges of education.

“CONUA is with us, NAMDA is with us, SSANU is with us, NASU is with us. The polytechnics and colleges of education are also with us,” he added.

The ASUU president urged the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to prioritize dialogue over threats, stressing that resolving the ongoing dispute requires genuine engagement and commitment from the government.

“He had better sit down and solve this problem or he will fail in trying to divide us,” Piwuna warned.
