Concern is growing over the health of celebrity Anambra native doctor, Chidozie Nwangwu, alias Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, who has reportedly gone partially blind in detention.
Nwangwu, arrested in February by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group for alleged offences bordering on money rituals, preparation of charms for criminals and other fetish practices, is said to be suffering severe health complications. His associates claim he is constantly rushed to a public hospital in Nnewi and has been kept in solitary confinement since his arrest.
Nwangwu’s arrest followed the implementation of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, signed by Governor Charles Soludo, which outlawed traditional ritual practices believed to encourage criminality. He and two other native doctors were subsequently arraigned before a State High Court in Awka in April.

Associates of the detained spiritualist, however, alleged persecution and human rights violations, insisting that Nwangwu was being victimised for practising African Traditional Religion. They called on the government to grant him bail to enable him access medical care and to accelerate his trial.
An associate who pleaded anonymity said Nwangwu’s businesses have collapsed since his incarceration, with his hotels shutdown and staff laid off. “He’s losing his sight and his health is deteriorating fast. He needs proper medical attention,” the source said.
Similarly, a businessman, Ebuka Uche, and socialite, Princess Njideka Ndiwe, added their voices to the call for Nwangwu’s bail, revealing that youths of Oba had appealled to Soludo during a recent visit to release the suspect.
“Outside his religious practice, Akwa Okuko is a key player in the hospitality industry where he has a couple of hotels. He’s an employer of labour and pays his taxes to the state which invariably contributes to the development of the state…
“He has three hotels with staff strength of about 80. He has also done Coorprate Social Responsibility. He has tarred roads; he gives them water, placed many indigent people on scholarship. He empowers youths yearly,” they added.
A Lagos based lawyer, Francis Obumse, also argued that the Homeland Security Law violates sections 38 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee freedom of thought, conscience, religion and association.
He described the law as unconstitutional, noting that it criminalises aspects of African traditional religion. “Nigeria is a secular state. Any attempt to suppress traditional worship is a breach of fundamental human rights,” he said.
Meanwhile, some residents of Anambra have appealed to Governor Soludo to consider Nwangwu’s deteriorating health and release him on compassionate grounds, pending the determination of his case.
Contacted for reaction, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Soludo, Christian Aburime, said he was not aware Nwangwu was going blind.
Aburime declined further comments on the issue, reminding the reporter that the case was still before the court and he would not want to be accused of contempt.
