At least six people, including five police officers, were killed on Sunday following separate gunmen attacks in Kogi State, eyewitnesses and local authorities confirmed.
According to Daily Trust, the first incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when gunmen riding on motorcycles stormed a police checkpoint in Abugi, Lokoja Local Government Area.
Witnesses reported that the attackers, who came in large numbers, opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint.
Three policemen were killed on the spot, while a civilian, yet to be identified, was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene.
In a follow-up attack later that morning, two more officers of the 70th Mobile Police Squadron (MOPOL) were ambushed along Ilafin Road in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area.
Residents said the gunmen fired sporadically, forcing community members to flee for safety. The coordinated assault left locals shaken.

“This is frightening. If armed policemen are not safe, what hope do ordinary citizens have in communities plagued by these bandits?” a resident, Babagbemi Oyekanmi, told reporters.
A local government official condemned the incidents, describing them as “an assault on peace” and urged both federal and state security agencies to intensify operations against criminal gangs in the region.
Kogi, located in north-central Nigeria, has experienced rising cases of armed attacks in recent months.
Security analysts say the latest killings underscore the growing vulnerability of law enforcement personnel who are increasingly targeted by armed groups.
