The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has suffered another major set back as Dr. Anthonia Ashiedu, a former Commissioner and a renowned grassroots and women mobilizer has dumped the party.

This was confirmed by Prof. Leroy Edozien, a notable leader in the party who was visibly unhappy over the trends of major key players leaving the party, he described her departure as a profound loss to the Party just as he asked, “Who will stem this tide”.

According to Prof. Edozien who wrote under his well known handle, Ubili Ka Nkwu Ahaba, “I received the news with sadness, because I see Dr Ashiedu as an asset that any responsible and progressive leadership would cherish, respect, nurture and exalt. It is sad that the reality of today’s APC has forced her out of the party.

“I hold Dr. Ashiedu in the highest regard. She exemplifies the quintessential progressive. A former Commissioner in Delta State government, she embodies intelligence, dignity and integrity. She worked very hard for APC in various roles, including as a Director in the Delta State 2023 Campaign Council.”

While arguing that the loss of such a personality from the Party is not an isolated case, Prof. Edozien asserted that the incident is a troubling pattern of internal dysfunction.

Prof Edozien added, “the root cause of the exodus is internal dysfunction. Pathetic, self-centred leadership has divided Delta State APC. It would be interesting to see if and how it recovers from the wounds inflicted by the ‘violent takeover.

“It appears that in Delta North the 2027 elections will be APC versus PDP in reverse order. In other words, the former PDP members (wearing the toga of ‘new APC’) versus old APC members (flying new flags). This scenario portrays a weaker APC in Delta North, not a stronger, unified and progressive one.”

As at press time, Dr. Ashiedu has not specified which of the other political Parties she would pitch tent with after dumping the APC which she worked so hard to grow but now taken over by the old People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members who defected into the APC in April 2025.
