According to Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto, no Nigerian president has ever been able to give a speech as memorable and impactful as the one she gave upon gaining independence in 1960.
Nigeria has failed to develop a cohesive national dream, Kukah said Thursday while answering questions on Arise Television’s Prime Time program.
Using the “American Dream” as an example, the flaming cleric pointed out that nation-building depends on mythologies and visions that pique people’s interest.

Kukah continued by saying that Nigeria’s military rulers hindered the development of ideas that may have created a more powerful country by stifling scholarly participation in governance.
“Nation building is about mythology,” he stated. Reality isn’t the point. Today’s America—the American Dream—is a lie.
However, as you can see, Nigeria has lacked the aptitude and capability to dream.
“For instance, after the 1960 speech, I’ve always told people to close their eyes and ask themselves if they have ever heard a Nigerian president’s speech that truly touched them or if there is one that, like JF Kennedy’s 1963 speech, is so memorable that you have to ask yourself, what was I doing when this speech was delivered?
That raises the question of what the intellectual content of governance is, which is another level.
“Because the soldiers are scaffolding after they realize they cannot win the intellectual argument.”
They prevented intelligence from taking over. As a result, they were teaching things for which they were not compensated.
