Badaru’s exit creates chance to reset Nigeria’s security architecture – Expert

The resignation of Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has created an opportunity for the government to reset its security strategy and strengthen coordination among security agencies, according to the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC).

In an exclusive interview with DAILYPOST on Tuesday, the Country Director of IHRC and retired Army Captain, Ambassador Abdullahi Bokaji Adamu, said the transition could bring in leadership with deeper operational experience.

“At a time of national security emergency, a swift and credible appointment is crucial to maintain momentum in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping,” he said.

Adamu added that the resignation raises expectations for a more professional, accountable, and human-rights-focused defence leadership.

“Nigeria now stands at a decisive moment: the next Defence Minister will play a central role in shaping stability, public confidence, and the nation’s overall security direction,” he said.

The resignation follows a statement on Monday from the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said Badaru stepped down with immediate effect, citing health reasons in a letter dated December 1, 2025.
