According to a report by Mirror on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Manchester United supporters made their feelings towards Alejandro Garnacho crystal clear as he returned to Old Trafford in Chelsea colours.
Although the 20-year-old winger remained on the bench during his new side’s 2-1 defeat to Ruben Amorim’s team, the home crowd booed and jeered him relentlessly from the moment he stepped off the Chelsea team bus to the warm-up on the pitch.
Garnacho’s £40 million summer exit was always likely to stir emotions, given the lingering concerns about his attitude during his United spell.
The tension dates back to last season’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham, where Garnacho described the campaign as “s***” and criticised his lack of game time.
By then, his relationship with Amorim had soured badly, and the club were already planning to move him on.
It marked a sad decline for a player once viewed as United’s golden boy, famously scoring a stunning overhead kick against Everton in 2023.
Instead of blossoming into a leader of the next generation, off-field spats and fan altercations eroded his standing.
One such moment came outside Old Trafford last November, when a supporter bluntly told him: “Garnacho, you’ve got to pass better today, yeah, please? Pass better, score a goal and work on your first touch as well, yeah?” The Argentine, to his credit, calmly replied: “Why you not playing, man?” before heading inside.
That interaction, though harmless, foreshadowed further clashes.
While on United’s post-season tour of Asia, Garnacho was filmed in Kuala Lumpur allegedly shoving a fan who asked whether he preferred Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
The TikTok clip showed him in sunglasses and a gold chain brushing off the supporter, who then claimed: “Bro, you pushed me.” Though unclear if any contact was made, the incident deepened the sense that Garnacho had lost touch with the fanbase.
The final straw for many came in June when Garnacho, still officially a United player, posted a photo of himself in an Aston Villa shirt with “Rashford 9” on the back, in tribute to his friend and fellow “bomb squad” outcast Marcus Rashford.
While Rashford responded warmly with “My brother” and a heart emoji, United fans reacted with anger, accusing Garnacho of disrespecting the badge.
When his farewell message came, Garnacho struck a polite tone, writing: “After an unforgettable five years, this special chapter in my life now comes to a close…
Every time I wore the badge, I gave everything I had. I leave proud of what we achieved together and excited for what’s to come.”
Yet, fans showed little forgiveness. Replies ranged from “Betrayal” to “AI wrote this,” while another said: “Will miss the player.
Not the attitude.”
With Chelsea yet to give him significant minutes, Enzo Maresca may hand Garnacho his first start in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City.
Still, his Old Trafford return underlined the hostility that will likely follow him for some time.BREAKING: Benjamin Sesko Reacts to Early Substitution in Man United vs Chelsea
