Col. Michael Randrianirina made this statement on Tuesday, following President Andry Rajoelina’s departure from the country during a confrontation between security forces and youth-led demonstrators.
The army colonel, who led a mutiny of soldiers joining anti-government Gen Z demonstrators, told the nation on Tuesday, “We have taken the power.” When the protests became violent, the President ran away, according to the DAILY POST.
Randrianirina told CNN that the military was destroying all institutions except the lower house of parliament, or National Assembly, which had just minutes before voted to impeach Rajoelina. The 51-year-old head had attempted to dissolve the assembly by decree on a day of upheaval for the nation off east Africa.
The president of the nation is still holding out against weeks of demonstrations led by Gen Z calling for his resignation, even though he left on a French military plane.
