Former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has commented on the recent defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His remarks add momentum to ongoing conversations about the political realignments reshaping the Southeast region of Nigeria.
Udeh-Okoye, speaking in a video that has since circulated online, asserted that the apex Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, is now a part and parcel of the APC. He maintained that the Southeast is becoming increasingly aligned with the ruling party, predicting that another state in the region will soon follow Enugu’s example by embracing the APC.
In his words, “Ndigbo is part and parcel of the APC; you can see us there. Just wait and see very soon, another state in the Southeast will fall to the APC.” His statement underscores the growing presence and influence of the ruling party in a geopolitical zone that has historically been a PDP stronghold.
The defection of Governor Peter Mbah has been described by political observers as a major boost to the APC’s ambition of consolidating its base across Nigeria. Mbah’s move follows similar defections by other Southeast politicians, signaling what some analysts view as a gradual erosion of PDP dominance in the region.
Udeh-Okoye’s assertion that the Igbo leadership and political elite are increasingly identifying with the APC suggests a broader trend toward political integration with the central government. This shift could have significant implications for both regional representation and national politics, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
