BIM/MASSOB leadership which made this confirmation in a press statement issued on Sunday via WhatsApp, said the idea is to take a pragmatic approach towards the issues surrounding Kanu’s prolonged detention.

“This pragmatic approach challenges Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Igbo National Assembly, and every other Igbo groups to be vehement in protesting the oppression of their people and forcefully speak out in their defense”.

Describing Uwazuruike as one Nigerian of Eastern descent whose stand on the issue of marginalization of his people is well known, BIM/MASSOB insisted that apart from leading BIM-MASSOB – a Non-violent and Non-exodus resistant movement which canvasses for Self-Determination as solution to the plight of S’E and parts of the Igbo speaking people in Delta, Rivers, Akwaibom, Cross River and Bayelsa States within the larger Nigerian federation, Uwazuruike did not mince words when he accused the Nigerian Government of being double standard.

BIM/MASSOB recalled that when Uwazuruike was granted a partial release on Friday, October 26, 2007 by a Federal High Court in Abuja after spending 2 years and a day in solitary confinement, he wondered why he should be let out on a three month bail to enable him bury his late Mother Ezinne Monica Uwazuruike when 10 of his members which included Comrade Uchenna Madu, Mr. Ambrose Anyaso, and others were still in detention in Keffi prison.

“After the burial of his late mother on Saturday, January 19, 2008, on January 22, Uwazuruike submitted himself to the İmo State Police Command, Owerri, and insisted on being taken into custody”.

BIM/MASSOB quoted Uwazuruike as having said, ‘it is morally wrong for me to stay a day longer outside the prison when my colleagues in the struggle, charged for the same offence are still languishing in Keffi prison’.

“The truth is that Uwazuruike is vehemently accusing the Nigerian Government of double standard and at the same time lamentingvthat the leaders of other ethnic Nationalities such as Alhaji Asari Dokubo of Niger Delta– Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), and factional leaders of Odua People’s Congress (OPC) , Dr Fredrick Fasehun and Otumba Ganihu Adams were released together with all their members”.

“Uwazuruike, our leader insisted on sitting by the roadside in front of the police headquarters, Owerri, the İmo State Capital, for hours unless he was taken into police custody. But as it turned out, the then İmo State Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Ahmed Yusuf refused to take him into custody, insisting that Uwazuruike’s case was beyond his capacity to handle”.

Also describing Uwazuruike as Ojukwu’s successor, the statement further declared: “Just few days ago, as Ojukwu successor to the prestigious Chieftaincy title of İjele Ndigbo, Ralph Uwazuruike, in a viral live video opted to join as one of the Defense witnesses of the detained leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPoB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu”.

“We therefore applaud our leader for the pragmatic approach, and by his willingness to join other lawyers to demand for Kanu’s release in a Non-violent manner”.

“By taking this bold stand, İjele Ndigbo, as a father has challenged the Apex- Igbo- Socio- Cultural- Organization , the Governors from S’E, members of İgbo National Assembly , and all Igbo groups to be vehement in protesting the oppression of their people and forcefully speak out in their defense”.
