BREAKING: Super Eagles’ Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Windshield Crack Mid-Flight

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were forced to make an emergency landing after the aircraft conveying the team developed a serious fault mid-flight on their return from Angola.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), the ValueJet chartered plane suffered a cracked windscreen approximately 25 minutes after takeoff from Luanda, where the team had stopped to refuel following their 2-1 win over Lesotho.

The pilot immediately initiated emergency procedures and safely returned the aircraft to Luanda Airport.

Contingency measures underway

The same aircraft had earlier transported the delegation to Polokwane for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

Following the mid-air emergency, arrangements have been made for another ValueJet aircraft to depart Lagos to pick up the team in Luanda and fly them to Uyo for Tuesday’s decisive encounter.

The NFF confirmed that top government officials, including the Minister of Aviation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Chief of Staff to the President, are coordinating efforts to expedite the necessary overflying and landing permits.
Crunch time for the Super Eagles

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, trailing leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa.

Only the group winners automatically qualify for the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, while the four best runners-up advance to a playoff.

Tuesday’s match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, is a must-win for the Super Eagles, who are looking to avoid missing consecutive World Cup tournaments after failing to qualify for Qatar 2022.

The Nigerian squad includes stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, and Samuel Chukwueze, who are all expected to feature in the high-stakes encounter.
