President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted a state pardon to Maryam Sanda, the woman sentenced to death in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, following a domestic dispute in Abuja.
The presidential clemency was announced on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. According to him, Sanda’s release followed appeals from her family and a review of her conduct during incarceration at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, where she spent six years and eight months.
Mr Onanuga explained that President Tinubu’s decision was influenced by her remorse, good behaviour, and the need to reunite her with her two children.

Maryam Sanda’s case drew nationwide attention after she was arraigned in November 2017 by the Nigerian Police for allegedly stabbing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello — son of former PDP National Chairman, Haliru Bello — to death during a domestic altercation.
Her trial, which lasted over two years, was fraught with adjournments, missing witnesses, and multiple changes in defence counsel. In January 2020, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court found her guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced her to death by hanging, ruling that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Sanda’s clemency forms part of a broader presidential pardon that included 175 convicts and former inmates, ranging from illegal miners and drug offenders to elderly prisoners who had demonstrated good conduct or acquired vocational skills while in custody.
“President Tinubu granted clemency to many based on remorse, reformation, and humanitarian grounds such as age or health,”
Onanuga stated, adding that the move reflected the administration’s commitment to justice tempered with mercy.
Maryam Sanda’s release has since reignited public debate on justice, forgiveness, and the moral boundaries of executive pardon in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
