The Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the recently concluded by-election for Kaura Namoda South Constituency in Zamfara State, Muhammad-Lawal Kurya, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress.
Kurya announced his defection on Saturday during a stakeholders’ consultation meeting held in Gusau for the Zamfara Central Senatorial District.
The meeting was organised by a prominent APC political support group, the Yazeed Project, aimed at urging Hon. Yazeed Danfulani to run for the senatorial seat in 2027.

The by-election in which Kurya was defeated by APC candidate Kamilu Sa’idu took place recently, and his switch to the ruling party has been described by the APC as a major boost to its growing support base in the state.
Speaking at the event, Kurya cited persistent neglect by PDP leadership and lack of recognition as key reasons for leaving the party.
“I have so many personal and political reasons that necessitated my defection from PDP to APC, among them, negligence,” Kurya said.
“Since I lost the by-election, the party leadership and top government officials of Zamfara have neglected me. In fact, most of them blocked my access to them.”
He expressed disappointment in the party he claimed to have supported actively since the 2023 general elections.
“I have been working for the party since the 2023 general elections but there was no reward,” he said.
“Today, I decided to join the APC, considering the popularity of the party in the just-concluded by-election that I contested under the PDP.”
Kurya also acknowledged the credibility of the by-election results, stating, “Our election was free as well as fair and honestly, I was defeated by the APC candidate, Kamilu Sa’idu.”
He said his decision was also influenced by the strength of the APC’s grassroots presence in his constituency and across Zamfara State.
“Therefore, I decided to join the APC considering its popularity, good leadership and it is a party with a grassroots structure across the state,” he added.
Kurya expressed confidence in the leadership of the APC, particularly under the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; former Governor, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari; and the state APC Chairman, Tukur Danfulani.
“I have the confidence that the APC will not neglect me the way PDP did to me after I spent a lot from my pocket for the party’s victory in the 2023 governorship election in the state,” he said.
Receiving Kurya into the APC, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, who represented the State Chairman, Tukur Danfulani, described the defection as a significant gain for the APC.
“On behalf of the APC leadership in the state, particularly the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle and Sen. Abdul’aziz Yari, we are happy today to receive Muhammad-Lawal Kurya to the APC,” Idris said.
“We welcome you to a progressive party. We are ready to go ahead with you. Your defection today indicated the soaring popularity of the APC in the state. I believe more are coming to the APC. Very soon, many serving lawmakers and Commissioners would join the party.”
Earlier, Abubakar Sadiq, State Coordinator of the Yazeed Project, explained the gathering was held to rally support for Hon. Yazeed Danfulani ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We have 550 participants of this epochal event comprising representatives and Coordinators from political wards across the four local government areas of Zamfara Central,” he said.
