Peace has finally been restored in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State after a nine-year dispute between the Asagba of Asaba and the Akor of Oko Kingdom over the division of monthly stipends from the statutory 5 percent traditional rulers’ allocation.
The reconciliation was facilitated by Dr. Obi Kelvin Ezenyili, the Executive Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government, and was officially confirmed during a joint meeting of the two royal leaders at the Council Secretariat in Asaba on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Dr. Ezenyili explained that the long-standing conflict began back in 2016 as a legal battle, involving several injunctions, court rulings, and appeals from both parties. He noted that the root of the problem was the suspension of stipends caused by disagreements over revenue sharing between the two traditional councils.

“The right to take a case to court is a basic civil right for anyone who feels wronged,” Ezenyili said. “But as members of a community, we should prioritize mediation and open dialogue to promote growth, strengthen relationships, and encourage the sharing of ideas instead of letting conflicts take over.”
The Council Chairman reflected on how the journey to bring the two monarchs together started during his first term in 2021, stressing that his dedication to restoring peace between Asaba and Oko never faltered.
“Today is a historic day for Oshimili South as we witness the friendly reconciliation of both Royal Majesties. Without a doubt, I am the happiest person here,” he said.
Dr. Ezenyili also thanked Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, for giving him the green light to resume peace efforts in his second term, calling the reconciliation a major milestone in the council’s history.
He also expressed gratitude to the royal fathers, palace chiefs, and all those involved in the mediation for their maturity and goodwill, adding that “God has worked through this process to bring unity and lasting peace back to Oshimili South.”
In a rare display of transparency, Dr. Ezenyili provided a detailed report on the total stipends that had accumulated since payments were stopped during the reign of the late Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Chike Edozien, up until September 2025.
In his response, the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN, OON), praised the Council Chairman for his dedication, honesty, and transparency throughout the reconciliation process.
“We’re all pleased that this matter has been resolved peacefully,” Asagba Azinge said. “It wasn’t an easy journey, but with open-minded discussions and a sincere willingness to find common ground, both sides have come to a place of peace.”
The monarch also clarified that there was never any real hostility between the people of Asaba and Oko Kingdoms—just a misunderstanding around the administrative handling of the stipends.
Likewise, the Akor of Oko Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Engr. Eze Osita I, shared the same appreciation, thanking the Council Chairman and all those involved in mediating the peaceful settlement.
This reconciliation signals the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation and unity between the Asaba and Oko Kingdoms after nearly ten years of division. The meeting closed with prayers for lasting peace, witnessed by traditional chiefs from both kingdoms and council officials.
Dr. Ezenyili expressed hope that this renewed partnership would boost trade, cultural exchange, and socioeconomic growth across Oshimili South.
