Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has raised questions about Nigeria’s historical treatment of the Igbo people and the contradictions he perceives in national discourse regarding unity and self-determination.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV, Sowore referenced the Nigerian Civil War and its aftermath.
“We went to civil war, fought against the Biafrans, and killed over 4 million people. We ended the war and said nobody was defeated,” he recalled.

The activist challenged what he described as contradictory attitudes toward the southeastern region.
“And if you don’t like the Igbos, why are you against them leaving? That’s the question I ask, especially of those people from other parts of the country who always say, ‘Oh, you can’t trust these people. We don’t like them. They fought against us,’” Sowore stated.
He questioned the logic behind enforced unity amid persistent tensions.
“If you don’t like them, why are you forcing yourself on them?” he asked.
Sowore articulated what he views as the legitimate demands of the southeastern population.
“So they are saying, ‘Look, if we are going to remain in this country known as Nigeria, created by the British colonialists or British corporations—Royal Niger Company—in 1900, we want to have our dignity respected. We want to have our rights respected. We want to govern ourselves,’” he explained.
The activist emphasized that such aspirations should not be criminalized.
“There’s no crime in that. But if you say they must stay, you must respect their rights,” Sowore concluded.
