Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has downplayed suggestions that a possible political alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would pose a threat to the ruling party in future elections.
Speaking on the matter, Oshiomhole argued that history does not favor such a partnership. According to him, both men have a record of electoral defeats, whether contesting jointly or separately.
“They have a history of being defeated together and they have a history of being defeated apart,” Oshiomhole stated. “They ran together, they were defeated. They ran separately, they were defeated. So if they come back together, very good, they will still be defeated.”

The former Edo State governor emphasized that the APC had consistently proven its dominance at the polls, citing the 2015 and 2019 general elections as examples. He insisted that the dynamics of Nigerian politics work against the opposition leaders, regardless of how they align.
Oshiomhole also addressed claims that President Muhammadu Buhari’s votes declined in 2019 compared to 2015, insisting that the facts show otherwise. “That is not correct,” he countered. “Buhari had 3 million more votes because I was the chairman by 2019. Check the figures. He had 3 million more votes than his runner-up.”
He maintained that the APC’s victory in 2019 was more resounding than in 2015, pointing to his stewardship as party chairman as a factor in mobilizing broader national support.
The senator further dismissed arguments that political dynamics could change drastically in favor of the opposition. According to him, the APC remains well-grounded and has shown resilience despite challenges. “Throw any number you want to throw, the point is that when these two ran together, they were loudly defeated by APC. So why are you suggesting if the two now do what they did before, something different will happen?” he queried.
Oshiomhole’s remarks reflect the APC’s confidence ahead of future contests, even as discussions continue among opposition leaders about possible alliances. While Atiku and Obi have yet to formally announce any renewed partnership, the speculation has already sparked debates about whether a united opposition could challenge the ruling party effectively.
