Niger Government Orders Mass Evacuation as Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro, and Zungeru Dams Prepare for Excess Water Release

Communities in Niger State have been placed on high alert as the four major hydroelectric dams located in the state—Shiroro, Jebba, Kainji, and Zungeru—prepare to release excess water.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, in a statement issued in Minna on Thursday, said the development could trigger catastrophic flooding across several local government areas.

According to NSEMA Director General, Abdullahi Arah, notifications received from the dam operators confirmed that water would be discharged at high volumes, posing threats to communities along the River Niger and River Kaduna.

“The dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute that could lead to the overflow of these rivers. We are advising our communities to limit activities around river banks during this peak rainy season to avoid flooding. Similarly, people living in riverine areas should relocate to safer grounds already identified,” Mr Arah warned.

He added that the Nigerian Hydrological Services had also issued a similar advisory, calling on residents to urgently move upstream to prevent loss of lives and property.

Mr Arah noted that the state had already begun to feel the negative impacts of flooding, with houses, farmlands, bridges, and link roads washed away across several local government areas, leaving many residents homeless and disrupting socio-economic activities.

Some of the affected local government areas include Lavun, Magama, Rafi, Kontagora, Gbako, Mokwa, Lapai, Katcha, Agaie, Suleja, Shiroro, Mashegu, Agwara, Bida, Edati, Munya, Bosso, Chanchaga, Paikoro, and Wushishi.

He confirmed that fatalities had also been recorded in some locations.

Beyond flooding, Mr Arah cautioned that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMeT, had predicted violent windstorms towards the end of the rainy season.

He urged residents to avoid standing under trees during rainfall and to stay away from weak or substandard structures.
