BREAKING: Ex-Governor Elected Chairman in Ekiti PDP Congress

A former acting Governor in Ekiti State and former Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Olatunji Odeyemi, has emerged Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Odeyemi emerged the winner after defeating Barr. Sunday Olowolafe by 936 to 290 votes during the party’s state congress held on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, where delegates from across the 16 local government areas converged to elect new executives into various party positions in the state.

Speaking with newsmen, Odeyemi commended the conduct of the congress, assuring that the new leadership would bring changes aimed at returning the PDP to its pride of place in the state.

“We have concluded the state congress. It was a huge success and I see it as a milestone as far as PDP is concerned in Ekiti State. We laid a very solid foundation through the successful conduct of elective state party positions today and I see that as the foundation laying of the re-establishment and the re-awakening of PDP in Ekiti State.

“Two of us contested for the position of the state chairmanship. I scored 936 votes and my opponent, Barr. Sunday Olowolafe, scored 290 votes.

“I and other executive members were duly sworn in immediately after the announcement and the declaration of results by the Returning Officer, that is the Chairman of the panel.

“With the new Executive Committee, I can assure you that there will be massive changes in the conduct of the affairs of the PDP in the state.

“We will go further to prove to Ekiti, Nigeria and the world that the PDP is truly back on track. With our best efforts, we will restore the PDP as the winning party in Ekiti State.”

Responding to allegations of irregularities during the congress, Odeyemi said the entire process was free, fair, and devoid of any distortions.

“Delegates from all the 16 local government areas of the state were all invited but delegates from 15 local governments were accredited and they voted. The remaining local government was Ikole Local Government. Two factions were fighting over the list from the council. After much persuasion and it could not be resolved, the Chairman of the panel decided to cancel Ikole Local Government because of the controversy. And according to the PDP constitution, in a contest like this, if you can record at least two-thirds of eligible voters, you are good to go. And 15 out of 16 local governments is more than two-thirds.

“After the panel chairman’s decision, votes for the 15 local governments were there in the open, they were openly sorted, recorded and counted after which, the declaration was made.

“The two of us are from the South senatorial district. Ikole Local Government is not my local government, Ikole Local Government is not his local government.

“Ikole Local Government belongs to the North senatorial district and if you go by the margin of almost 700 votes, the total number of votes from Ikole Local Government is about 100 or less than that, so even if Ikole Local Government delegates had voted and he had all, the difference will still be there.

“It was keenly contested. No element of rigging, malpractices, irregularities or distortions in the entire process.

“The Chairman of the panel, Chief Tunde Akindehin, led the nine-man panel, comprising six males and three females, who conducted the congress and they all signed in favour of the process.”

In his remarks, Barr. Sunday Olowolafe, the other chairmanship contestant, accused elements within the PDP of manipulating the process and disenfranchising legitimate delegates.

Olowolafe, a former legal adviser of the party in the state, said that the conduct fell short of accepted standards, despite a new timetable issued by the PDP National Working Committee following protracted legal disputes in the state.

Olowolafe alleged that there was no accredited list of delegates in use at the venue and that non-delegates were permitted to vote.

He further claimed that elected members who should have been accredited were locked out, especially delegates from Ikole Local Government.

“The opportunity to be alive is a privilege, and we could see that most of the delegates came around today for the purpose of exercising their rights.

“However, it is very unfortunate that the process has been compromised. My agent and I raised complaints earlier, even before June, about irregularities, yet those issues have not been addressed.

“How do you identify delegates without an accredited list? There was no official list used. Anybody who claimed to be from a local government was allowed to vote. At the same time, elected members who were supposed to be accredited were locked out of the venue.”

A member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Ekiti, Michael Oke, expressed optimism that PDP will reclaim Ekiti in the 2026 governorship election, urging supporters to capitalise on internal reforms to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Oke, who criticised the record of the state Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, questioned the impact of the monthly allocation from the federal account on Ekiti under the APC government.

“PDP is back! You know that. APC is in trouble, and we are going to defeat them in the 2026 governorship election, I can assure you. From today, they know they are gone. Ekiti is a PDP state,” he said.

Other executive members include Ebenezer Oladipo as Deputy Chairman, Kole Abiodun as Secretary, Adekanbi Oshin as State PRO, Taye Otitoju as Organising Secretary, Abiona as Financial Secretary, Osuntokun as Women’s Leader, Barr. Ola Alonge as Legal Adviser, Lawrence Olayinka as Auditor.

Also, Toyin Alaje as Ekiti South Senatorial Chairman, Sola Omotoso as Youth Leader and Kayode Yussuf as Ekiti Central Senatorial Chairman.
