An Indian woman resident in the US has cried out after she was arrested and deported to her home country.
The woman lived in Hercules in the San Francisco Bay Area, but she was arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to a report by the BBC, the woman, Mrs Harjit Kaur, 73 arrived in the US in 19931 with her sons.
She has been living and working in the US since then, and she has no criminal record.
Mrs Kaur was said to have left India to seek asylum in the US, but her asylum status was not approved since then.
The grandmother was arrested and moved to an ICE holding facility in Georgia on September 19.

She was subsequently deported to India on September 22. The woman has cried out over her deportation.
The woman alleges that she was mistreated by ICE, but the body stated that she ought to have been evicted as far back as 2005.
ICE said, per BBC:
Ms Kaur had “exhausted decades of due process. Harjit Kaur has filed multiple appeals all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of appeals and LOST each time. Now that she has exhausted all legal remedies, ICE is enforcing US law and the orders by the judge; she will not waste any more US tax dollars.”
After she was arrested, there were efforts to have her released by US Congressman John Garamendi, who represents the Californian district where Harjit Kaur lives.
The BBC reports that Garamendi submitted an appeal to ICE for the grandmother to be released.
The appeal reads:
“This administration’s decision to detain a 73-year-old woman – a respected member of the community with no criminal record who has faithfully reported to ICE every six months for more than 13 years – is one more example of the misplaced priorities of Trump’s immigration enforcement.”
Before she was deported, Mrs Kaur told The Times of India that she was mistreated and that she could not walk.
“After living there for so long, you are suddenly detained and deported this way, it is better to die than to face this. In such a situation, one should not live. Look at my feet, they are swollen like cow dung cakes.”
