Flood Control: Lagos Commences Demolition of Illegal Structures Along Ikota

As part of its ongoing efforts to ease the free flow of stormwater in Eti-Osa LG, the Lagos State government, on Friday, commenced the immediate demolition of illegal structures blocking the free flow of stormwater along Ikota, Lekki.

The Guardian’s quick visit to the area on Friday revealed that efforts are in top gear by the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to avert perennial flooding.

A quick visit to Ikota and Agungi areas of Eti-Osa revealed that the water is yet to recede into the lagoons after the area was submerged in massive flooding following a deluge on Monday.

Some residents who spoke with The Guardian on Friday narrated their ordeal, with many calling on the Lagos State Government to embark on an improved drainage system to prevent massive loss of lives and property.

Speaking to The Guardian on Friday, Facility Manager of La Quidad Mall, Mr. Segun Odunmbaku, appealed to the state government to proffer a lasting solution to the pressing issue of flooding in the area, given the negative impact of Monday’s flooding.

“The impact of the Monday flood calls for a lasting solution to the pressing demand for better drainage in the Eti-Osa local government area. You need to be here to see how everything was at a standstill; no vehicle could move for hours, and businesses suffered as many could not get to their place of work,” he told The Guardian.

Another resident, Sandra, who resides at Madam Cellular Estate, Agungi Ajinran, said the flooding in the area was at waist-high level, leaving residents to remain indoors for two days.

“Our area has always been flooded due to poor drainage, but Monday’s downpour made it worse for everyone. I was scared for my life, honestly, because you could drown right on the street. We had to stay indoors for three days.

“The government should please come to our aid because we don’t know what to expect next when a bigger rain comes,” she told The Guardian.
