Renowned author Richard Akinnola has recalled how Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti reacted after the death of journalist Dele Giwa.
Speaking on the Edmund Obilo Show from 18:56, Akinnola said Dele Giwa, the founding editor of Newswatch Magazine, was killed in 1986 by a parcel bomb at his Lagos home. The assassination shocked Nigeria and remains unresolved.
Akinnola explained that shortly after the incident, a reporter asked Fela who was responsible for Giwa’s death. Known for his outspoken nature, Fela responded with a coded remark that reflected the tense atmosphere of the time.

He recounted the exchange, saying Fela’s reply was both direct and cautious. He made his point without openly naming anyone, showing awareness of the risks that came with such accusations during that period.
In Akinnola’s words, “When Dele Giwa died, a reporter asked Fela, ‘Who killed Dele Giwa?’ He replied, ‘I know say na baba.’ But if you put ‘Gida,’ you are on your own.”
