Sule Lamido, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Jigawa State, has said his personal friendship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not prevent him from opposing him in the 2027 presidential election.
Lamido made this known in an interview, explaining that while he shares a long history with Tinubu, their political paths remain different.
He said that their recent meeting in Kaduna, where they were seen exchanging pleasantries during a social event, did not change his stance on keeping the opposition strong.
The two politicians, who have known each other since their days in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 1990s, were seen laughing together at the wedding of former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari’s son.

The encounter drew attention across political circles, especially as Lamido has remained one of the most vocal critics of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He stressed that beyond his personal relationship with Tinubu, his priority is to build unity among Nigerian politicians, sustain the PDP, and strengthen opposition efforts to keep the government accountable.
“We know each other very well, but we haven’t met in a while, and now he is the President of Nigeria.
I told him, ‘You look nice.’ He also told me, ‘Is that how you have changed? Sule, I love you because you are trustworthy.’ We laughed and left.”
Lamido also said that his party will continue to hold discussions to resolve internal disputes and foster cooperation among both current and former members.
